Our  Kuleana

Archie Kalepa’s story is essential to Lahaina’s cultural fibers. A native of son of Maui, he is a descendant of the Konohiki - the traditional stewards of  this ʻāina, who have safeguarded this community and ocean for generations. Archie embodies the spirit and resilience of Lahaina, carrying forward the legacy of his ancestors.

Archie’s journey led him to the ocean where he has worked as a dedicated lifeguard for Maui County. His understanding of the ocean comes through his upbringing and his pilina to ʻohana waʻa as a crew member who has sailed on long distance voyages across Oceania. He has earned a reputation as one of Hawaii’s most deeply respected lifeguards and watermen.

Ho'ulu Lahaina Gathering

Mahalo to all who joined us for The Hoʻūlu Lahaina Unity Gathering in January 2024. The gathering included a Unity Walk ending at Launiupoko Beach offering the people of Maui and 'ohana and wa'a from across our pae 'āina to be in community with one another and focus on our journey of healing for Lahaina.

"I want to talk about coming up with a sail plan. When I say that, it's about how our people became a part of this place, how this place became Hawai'i and how we became Hawaiians. How this community became an ethnic thriving community. I think we have to adopt some core values and I'm going to keep it real simple. You love your family and take care of the land and you will build your community. In the beginning, when our people first came here those were the values that allowed them to thrive in this place. If Lahaina can have the opportunity to set these plans into action we will have a true course of knowing where we are going and how we are going to get there."
